What is the UK ETA for Malaysian Citizens?

The UK Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is an electronic permission that enables Malaysians to transit through or travel for short visits to the countries of England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

Previously, Malaysians could travel visa-free to the United Kingdom for up to six months. But as of January 8th, 2025, they will now require a UK ETA if they want to go there for short visits. Applications opened on November 27, 2024, and demand is expected to be high.

The scheme was first introduced in October 2023 as a way to strengthen border security and digitalize the entry process for short-term visitors.

It has gradually been rolled out since then to citizens of various countries, including Qatar, who were the first to be eligible to apply for it, before extending it to include nationals of the rest of the Gulf Cooperation Council countries, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, and Kuwait.

It is now been extended to Malaysians, as well as citizens of Australia, the USA, New Zealand, and Canada, as well as citizens of other non-European countries.

This digital permit will be mandatory for all visitors who do not already have a UK immigration status before traveling to these destinations or require a visa for short stays there.

It is important to note that an ETA is not a UK Visa for Malaysians. However, it does allow Malaysians to stay in the UK on a short stay for the following purposes;

  • Tourism, visiting family and friends, business, or short-term study (6 months validity).
  • Traveling to the UK on the Creative Worker visa concession (up to 3 months).
  • Visiting the UK for a permitted paid engagement.
  • Transiting through the UK – even if you’re not going through UK border control.

Statistics on Malaysian Visitors to the United Kingdom

According to statistics, more than 12.4 million visits from Malaysia were made to overseas destinations in 2023. 156,000 of these visits were to the UK.

Overall, travelers from Malaysia forked out around US$11.1 billion on their international travels. In the UK, their total spend was £1,151 per visit totalling £179.0 million overall.

Advantages of the UK ETA

The UK ETA for Malaysian nationals provides several advantages for travelers. Some of the main ones can be categorized as follows:

Quick and easy application process

The process of applying for a UK ETA for Malaysian citizens is very straightforward, user-friendly, and quick. You will be able to complete the UKeta online application in just a few minutes.

Cost-effective

The UK ETA is much less expensive than other types of visas Malaysians might be eligible for, such as the Youth Mobility Scheme, UK Ancestry, and Skilled Worker Dependent visas.

Multi-entry validity

UK ETAs are valid for a period of two years, and in that time, Malaysians can make as many visits as they want to the United Kingdom so long as their passport is valid. However, they will not be allowed to stay for more than six months at a time on any particular visit.

One Application

As the UK ETA is valid for two years, you will not need to secure separate travel permissions for separate visits within that time frame.

Fast Approval Time

Unlike traditional visas, applications for the UK ETA tend to get approved quickly.

The standard processing time is within 3 business days. However, the specific time in which your application will be assessed and a decision made will depend on several factors. These include the volume of applications the British government receives and whether you are traveling during the peak season.

UK ETA Eligibility Criteria for Malaysian Citizens

As of November 27th, 2024, Malaysians will be eligible to apply for the UK ETA. However, they will have to meet certain requirements for their application to be approved. This includes:

  • Malaysian CitizenThe applicant must be a citizen of Malaysia and not just a resident of that country. Unless they are a national of an ETA-eligible country.
  • Valid PassportIt is important that you have a valid passport at the time of your application and that it has at least six months remaining until its expiration day after your intended arrival date in the United Kingdom.
  • Maximum Visit LengthApplicants should not be planning to remain in the UK for longer than six months in one visit.
  • No Criminal RecordIf you have been convicted of a crime that has resulted in you spending at least a year in jail, UK authorities might deem you ineligible for an ETA.

UK ETA Application Process

When applying for a UK ETA, Malaysian citizens will be required to provide the Home Office with specific biometric and biographic details and answer a series of questions.

Here is what is involved in applying for a UK ETA.

1

Complete the Application Form

The first thing you will need to do is to complete the application form.

You should find this process pretty easy, and it won’t take more than a few minutes to complete. However, it will require you to input your name, home address, phone number, and date of birth. Additionally, you’ll have to confirm your passport number, nationality, and when you expect to arrive in the UK.

On top of this, you will also need to answer questions about whether you have ever been involved in hate crimes, acts of terrorism, or war crimes (which you will have to answer honestly), as well as whether you have a criminal conviction and what your current work status is.

Finally, you must confirm that you will not be arriving in the UK within the next three business days and that you have read the privacy policy and terms of conditions, as outlined by the British government.

Requirements for UK ETA Application

When applying for an ETA for the UK from Malaysia, you will need to provide the British Home Office with several documents, all of which should be current, valid, and in operation.

Here is a brief rundown of what you will need.

Passport

As the ETA will be digitally linked to their biometric passport, all Malaysians must provide the UK government with an original copy of the passport they intend to travel with.

It should include your bio page and not have been altered by filters or other effects. In addition, all your personal details must be clearly legible, and you are not allowed to send a screenshot.

Digital Passport Photo

In addition to a copy of your passport, you must also upload a digital photo. Make sure you follow any guidelines you are prompted with.

UK ETA Fees and Processing Time

When submitting your UK ETA application, you will be asked to pay the amount of £78.

This figure includes the fee issued by the British government and our professional service fees.

Once you have submitted your UK ETA, it will be processed and either approved, rejected, or refused within three working days.

You will receive notification of the decision via email

UK ETA Validity and Duration of Stay

If you are granted a UK ETA, it will be valid for 2 years from the date it was approved or until the expiration date of your Malaysian passport – whichever happens sooner.

Over these two years, Malaysian citizens will be able to visit the UK as often as they want, although they cannot spend more than six months on one continuous visit.

UK ETA: Renewal and Extension Options

Unfortunately, the UK ETA cannot be extended or renewed. That said, if your passport expires before the two years are up, you must get a new ETA as a result of your existing one being linked to the previous passport you had when you applied for it.

If any Malaysians want to stay in the UK beyond the two-year period, they can apply for a traditional UK visa from Malaysia, depending on the purpose of their visit.

UK ETA Refusals: Common Reasons and Solutions

If you receive the unfortunate news that your application has been rejected, it will most likely be due to human error, such as not filling out your passport number or address properly or sending incorrect documentation. It could also be because your photos were not of the sufficient standard required.

Under these circumstances, this doesn’t mean you can’t ever visit the UK. You just can’t do it under the specific UK ETA application you submitted.

The UK government will advise you of the reason for their refusals, and you are free to reapply. However, you should make sure you address the reasons why your application was rejected when doing so.

If your ETA is refused, it could be for one of several reasons, such as a serious criminal record, perceived threat to the well-being of the general public, otherwise being flagged as a security concern, or prior breaches of immigration regulations, like overstaying a visa.

This decision is final, and you are not able to appeal it. So, if you receive this verdict, your only course of action is to pursue alternative options, such as applying for an appropriate type of UK visa.

Traveling with a UK ETA: Important Details

If you have been approved for a UK ETA and you intend to travel to England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales, there are some things you should know. They include the following:

  • When you arrive in the UK, you can expect to be subjected to passport, visa, and security checks. An ETA does not guarantee Malaysians automatic entry into the UK. They must show and scan their passports at Border Control and can still be refused entry.
  • You will need to pass through Border Control on every visit you make to the UK within its two-year validity period.
  • Your UK ETA is digitally linked to the passport you used during your application. So, if you need to get a new one due to it being lost, stolen, or expiring, you will have to get a new ETA as well.
  • If you have multiple passports due to dual nationality, you will only be able to travel to the United Kingdom with your UK ETA on the passport in which you applied for it.
  • Once in the UK, you will have to abide by the laws of the country. Serious failure to do so could lead to you being arrested, deported, and having your UK visa revoked.

What Does the UK ETA Not Allow You to Do

You should be aware that if you are willing to visit the UK for the following reasons, you can not do this using an ETA. Instead, you will need to apply for the appropriate UK visa for Malaysian nationals.

  • Remain in the United Kingdom for longer than a continuous 6-month period.
  • Essentially living in the UK on account of continual and successive visits.
  • Claim governmental benefits or any other types of public funding.
  • Work in a paid or unpaid capacity for any UK business, except for one that has been previously allowed under the Creative Worker visa concession or a permitted paid engagement.
  • Register a civil partnership or get married (you’ll need to apply for a Marriage Visitor visa if you want to do this).

If you have been found by the authorities to have done any of these practices, you’ll most likely be deemed to be in breach of your UK ETA terms and conditions. The ETA will be revoked, and you’ll most likely be deported.

FAQ

From January 8th, 2025, if you are a Malaysian citizen, you will need a UK ETA to visit England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, and Wales.

You can apply for one starting 27th November 2024.

Malaysian citizens will not need a visa if they intend to come to the UK for less than six months for tourism, visiting family and friends, or short-term work or study. Instead, they will need to simply apply for a UK ETA.

However, if they want to stay in England, Scotland, Northern Ireland, or Wales for longer, for instance, to work or study, they will need to apply for the relevant visa to the UKfrom Malaysia.

Some people make reference to an ‘ETA visa’, but the ETA is not a visa. In fact, there is no such thing as a UK electronic visa for Malaysians. The Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) is, in fact, a digital permission scheme for travel launched by the UK government in November 2023 as part of a wider measure to improve border security.

It has recently been extended to Malaysian nationals, who used to be able to travel to the UK visa-free.

Its introduction means they will need to secure one if they want to transit through or visit the UK for certain purposes without having to apply for a fully-fledged visa.

After January 8th, 2025, if you are a Malaysian national who wants to travel to the UK, you will need to have a valid ETA.

The UK ETA processing time is between 24 and 72 hours, and you will receive a notification via email within that timeframe advising of whether you have been approved to travel from Malaysia to the UK.

However, if you want to travel to the UK immediately for an emergency (i.e., within 24 hours), for instance, in the event of a loved one not having long to live, you may want to contact the British Government directly. They might be able to advise on your best course of action.

As part of their rollout of the UK ETA scheme, the British government will be extending the requirements to various European countries throughout 2025.

This condition will kick in on April 2, 2025, with applications opening on March 5, 2025.
